Poker is a simple game to learn, but there are some things that are only encountered with experience. Some rules are set in stone, and others have just been generally accepted. We will explore three situations in poker that will eventually come up, and learn what happens when they do.
Dead Hands: The first thing one should be aware of in poker is protecting the hand. Holding the cards, or using a card protector will help with this. If the cards are unprotected, the dealer could mistake this for a fold, and take the cards away. Verbal declarations are also binding, so one shouldn’t say fold unless they really mean it. Once the cards go into the muck, there is usually nothing that can be done, so keep aware, because dead hands could end up costing a lot of money.
Misdeals: Even an experienced card dealer will sometimes make a mistake, and that is part of the game. It could be as simple as dealing a card to player face-up, or dealing the cards to the wrong person, which makes the order of dealt cards wrong. This would require the dealer to collect all the cards and start over, where giving a player a card face up could just require a new card. Keep in mind that misdeals can only be called before action begins, so if two people have already started the betting after the misdeal, the hand has to play out.
Poker Etiquette: There are some rules that aren’t written, but are widely accepted. Proper poker etiquette is a big part of the game, and makes it more pleasurable for everyone. A “slow roll” is an example of bad poker etiquette. This is when someone has the best hand possible and pretends like they have a tough decision to make after the opponent is all in. There is no strategy involved in this and it only makes the other player upset to have been lead to believe they won. Another unwritten rule is to never give any information about a hand after a fold. If someone shows emotion after the flop, this gives other players information about what hand they folded.
Keeping these things in mind while playing poker will cause fewer complications and confusion, and make the game more enjoyable for everyone.
